Now that the heat of summer is here, it is more important than ever to take care of your car. Extreme heat can wreak havoc on a poorly-maintained vehicle. Here are a few summer maintenance tips to make sure you keep your car is prime condition.
Wash your car. You might not have salty winter roads to deal with, but summertime leaves behind its own grime in the form of bird droppings, dust, and dead bugs. Make washing your car a regular habit — at least once a month is good. Follow up the wash with a good wax to keep your car’s exterior protected.
Use a sunshade. When you are not driving, but parked in the hot sun, your car will quickly turn up the heat. We have all experienced the discomfort of getting into a sweltering car where the steering wheel is hot enough to burn your hands. Protect your car from some of the sun’s rays by using a simple dashboard sunshade. You can even use one in the rear window to protect the backseat.
Check your coolant system. Give your coolant system a thorough check. In addition to checking the coolant fluid levels, inspect the hoses and coolant reservoir. If you find any problems, get your car serviced.
Charge up your HVAC. If you have ever had to ride in a car in the summer without air conditioning, you know how important that system is. If your air-conditioning hasn’t been cooling the way it used to, it may be a sign of a leak or that it needs a recharge.
Replace your air filter. Find your car’s air filter and take a look at it. If it is clogged up with decomposing leaves and other debris, it is time for a new one. The air filter helps to keep your cabin air fresh.
